While no one denies it’s a
dog-eat-dog world out there, some people are trying to shift
the menu into a more palatable form. Bruce Van Horn is one
such person.
Bruce’s personal
experiences and the insights that grew from them became life
altering, and provoked him to exchange his executive briefcase
for a yoga mat to cushion his journey to a more serene
philosophy he shares with others.
Bruce is
fully engaged in the practice of reducing stress in our lives
through well accepted eastern philosophies and one of their
most respected physical manifestations, Hatha Sivananda
yoga.
Bruce, born in
1961 in Bronx, N.Y., attended New York University, where he
earned a BS in accounting and an MBA in taxation and
finance. His choice of careers at the time was motivated
by the financial security generally found among the
professions, an influencing factor grounded in his early years
growing up in a struggling household.
Prestigious accounting firms such as KPMG
and Price Waterhouse employed him before he formed his own
Manhattan-based company in 1987. He sold it in 2000 when
a combination of factors took hold.
Bruce's father's
struggle with Alzheimer's was the catalyst for change in his
life. He found that music, meditation and movement were
universal forms of communication and healing.
Unfortunately they were being left out of the healthcare
equation. He left his lucrative Accounting practice to
become an Author, Yoga/Movement Therapist and Certified
Dementia Practitioner.
Human beings have been healing themselves
with music and dance for thousands of years. One needs to
look no further than Gospel and Flamenco, two art forms born
out of persecution.
The scientific studies show that
dance/movement therapies are the most effective preventative
for Alzheimer’s, Dementia and pain management. In
response to this health challenge, Bruce developed Yomenco, a
combination of Yoga and Flamenco Dancing. He soon
realized his creation had appeal beyond the senior demographic.
Bruce is
also the author of a number books including his recent Yoga For
Men, which to date has sold more than 25,000 copies, and
several others on wellness. As testimony to his
versatility, he also has incubated technical companies in the
90’s, such as the largest Russian Internet portal.
Bruce is
currently involved in producing a new video/DVD called Yomenco,
which is a combination of Yoga and Flamenco and developing
television programming, a Documentary and an independent film
based on his work.
