Do No Harm is a medical thriller set in the dangerous new world of corporate pharmaceuticals and corporate eldercare.
Jeff Green studied medicine but now works in marketing for a major drug company, ZioTech Labs. He has a successful career and thinks he is happy as he prepares to marry his equally career-driven girlfriend, Deborah. But a visit to his grandmother, Sarah, in a nearby nursing home changes everything.
Sarah is not doing well. The emotional life and memory of this once-vital lady are in tatters. A supervisor at the nursing home, an attractive young woman named Kathy Thompson, tells Jeff that the problem might be a new drug, Wellebrex. Jeff is stunned: Wellebrex is manufactured by ZioTech, his employer.
Jeff investigates and discovers things are not what they seem in his company. A friend from medical school, Tom Leadley, also works for ZioTech. Tom insists Wellebrex is fine but he clearly knows more than he is telling. Jeff's fiance becomes angry with his crusade, fearing it will hurt their future. Jeff becomes closer to Kathy and the community at the nursing home. His superiors at ZioTech promote Jeff in an attempt to silence him. Then Tom is found dead –suicide or murder? — and Jeff understands that he has stumbled into something bigger and deadlier than he had imagined.
DO NO HARM uses a suspenseful, entertaining story to explore serious, timely issues. Not only have Americans become a medicated nation, but Pharmaceutical companies are using nursing homes and there helpless captive populations to test new treatments and exploit new applications for existing medications, at great risk to the well being of the residents. In Jeff and Kathy we get a love story. In Jeff's relationship with his grandmother–he dreams of dancing with her again as he did as a boy –we get family heart. And in Kathy's assistant, Max Jones, a Caribbean dance therapist and shaman, we get glimpses into the world of alternative medicine and the wisdom of other cultures. People do not have to be as dependent on drugs as corporations want us to believe.
DO NO HARM is a thriller that entertains even as it teaches, an exciting blend of CSI, THE INSIDER, MICHAEL CLAYTON, with a dash of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST. A story where individuals take control of their lives and win, it's a movie that is destined to transform a very wide audience.
